Habit #5 (Hábito 5)

Listen Before You Talk

Escucha antes de hablar

Hello Howell Families!

We are very excited to provide monthly Leader in Me family activities!  These activities are designed to build leadership and strengthen families through open dialogue.  Each month focuses on understanding and practicing one of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Each activity provides a structure to guide you through discussion questions as well as videos which demonstrate the habit. As you work through the activity as a family, feel free to add more questions as they pertain to your student/ family.

This month, the family activities focus on the 5th habit of the Leader in Me series; Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood.  This habit is an important habit not only for your child, but for all of us!  When we seek first to understand, then to be understood, we have a mindset of win-win.  We act with consideration as we seek to understand the other person’s point of view.  We act with courage as we express our own views with clarity and respect. Through practice with empathic listening and respectfully seeking to be understood, we build healthy, positive relationships.

Within the below document, you will find links to lessons that are geared toward elementary-aged children as well as middle school children.  Feel free to do all of the lessons or just the lessons that are age appropriate for your child.

Again, we are very excited to be back in school, and we hope you are excited to strengthen your family bonds and share in your child’s learning!

Have a great time discussing and practicing this habit with your family!
